Local Salvation Army Applies for Kroc Planning Funds; FourthWave Facilitates
Fort Wayne, IN - The Salvation Army Fort Wayne Corps has applied for planning funds through the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center initiative. If approved, the Fort Wayne Corps would receive up to $860,000 to develop a proposal that could lead to the creation of a Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in central Fort Wayne. It is expected that the Center would include a variety of family recreation, human service, arts, athletic, educational and religious facilities to complement current and planned investment in the near-downtown area.
A general Letter of Intent was submitted September 20 to the Indiana Divisional Headquarters in Indianapolis for review. If it passes that review, the Letter of Intent is submitted to the Central Territory Headquarters in Chicago September 30. By mid-October, the Fort Wayne Corps will be notified whether it has been selected to submit a full proposal. The exact amount that may be applied for will be determined by the Chicago headquarters later in the fall and must be matched with funds from the community. The full proposal is due late next spring, 2005.
Major Mark Turner, Allen County Coordinator, stated that The Salvation Army is working with several private and public organizations to develop the proposal. "While competition for this project from throughout the Midwest is expected to be strong, we have prepared well for this first step in the selection process," Turner said. "We believe that the Kroc Corps Community Center initiative is a great opportunity to serve our community through ministry and outreach." One of the private organizations assisting the Corps is FourthWave, LLC. "We believe that the development of a Kroc Corps Community Center is a catalyst to spur significant improvement in the heart of the city," said Don Willis, chair, FourthWave, LLC. "FourthWave is dedicated to economic development in Fort Wayne and we are pleased to support the Corps' efforts."
